Best–selling author and ministry leader Thom S. Rainer drew an exceptional response when he posted a 500–word declaration about church membership to his daily blog. “I Am a Church Member” started a conversation about the attitudes and responsibilities of church members — rather than the functional and theological issues — that previous new member primers all but ignored.Thoughtfully expanded to book form, I Am a Church Member begins to remedy the outbreak of inactive or barely committed church members, addressing without apology what is expected of those who join a body of believers. When a person’s attitude is consistently biblical and healthy, matters of giving, serving, and so forth will fall into place more naturally.
Six intentional chapters with study questions guide this rising discussion:
It's easy to love church when it's all going well - when people are godly towards us, when the service is just how we like it... but this book really challenges us to be committed to the local church even when it is most difficult. We are called to make 6 pledges: (1) To be a functioning church member; (2) to unify; (3) to make sacrifices; (4) to pray for leaders; (5) to lead our families in these things; and (6) to treasure the gift of church membership. Throughout this short book we are reminded how easy it is to make church about what we want - to be 'country club' consumers rather than a Christ-centred community who serve one another in love. Each chapter relies heavily on scriptural direction as to what a church family should look like, and applies it pointedly to our hearts. The study questions at the end of each chapter are particularly thorough, making this book ideal for a personal growth project, a one-to-one study resource, or the basis of a series of small group Bible studies.
I love the Church. I am convinced that there is nothing quite like the family of God. What a wonderful privilege it is to be part of the body of Christ. But heres the thing; I so easily treat being part of the Church like being part of the local Golf Club. I attend, therefore, I expect. If like me you sometimes slip into consumer mode in terms of your attitude to Church, then this book will greatly challenge you in both a biblical and extremely practical way. The author so brilliantly reminds us that when Jesus saved us to his Church he called us to something far more radical and costly than Golf Club membership. ‘Church Membership from a biblical perspective, however, is about servanthood. It’s about giving. It’s about putting others first.’ Being part of the Church family is not about me and my felt needs, it’s about serving others, loving others and the glory of God. In the various chapters the author invites us to pledge our allegiance to the following; I will be a functioning church Member. I will be unifying Church Member. I will not let my Church be about my preference and desires. I will pray for my Church Leaders. I will lead my family to be a healthy Church Members. I will treasure Church Membership. Maybe you are someone thinking through what being part of a Church means. Perhaps you are a long standing member who is in need of a fresh reminder of both the beauty of the Church and the call to be a sacrificial member. Wherever you are coming from, I would highly recommend this book! At 80 odd pages it is short and easy to digest and easily read in an afternoon. There are also some useful application questions at the end of each chapter. Great stuff!
