Patricia St John was a master storyteller and her books continue to captivate readers even today, but her personal story is no less exciting than one of her fictional tales.
It is full of adventure, larger-than-life characters and exotic destinations. But this isn’t some unimaginable far-flung lifestyle – central to her story is the work of God in her life
and in the lives of those she met. This is her story, told in her own words and in her characteristically engaging and gripping style.
Discover the inspiration behind Patricia’s classic tales and be challenged by her commitment to service, her desire to make Jesus known and her willingness to follow God wherever He leads.
I love to read Christian biographies and autobiographies and this is my favourite. Why? Because Patricia St. John radiated the love of Christ in all she did and made Jesus attractive and accessible to all she met. But first in this book we are introduced to her amazing Godly parents and are given glimpses of their sacrificial and Christ-centred parenting. Patricia is probably best known for her popular and enduring children’s book, ‘Treasures of the Snow’ and it is fascinating to read of her time in Switzerland as a child and how the book came to be written. But for me the undoubted heart of the book recounts the time she spent at a missionary nurse, first in Tangier at a hospital run by her brother Farnham (he deserves a book of his own) and then up in a town in the mountains where she pioneered a Christ-inspired nursing ministry. Look out for Hamid, the ten year old evangelist, Fatima who helps Patricia run the woman’s group, but above all look out to see what God accomplishes through one humble submitted woman. How He can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. Buy this book and after reading it, give copies (as I did) to (non-Christian) mothers, mothers-in-law, aunts, elderly neighbours etc to inspire and encourage. You (and they) will not be disappointed.
Patricia St John was a wonderful storyteller so her story reads as beautifully as any of her novels - it's so enjoyable to read. Had me laughing and sharing amusing anecdotes multiple times, welling up with tears at her humility and extraordinary story. Not a hint of holier-than-thou - she is so beautifully self-effacing it is a genuine delight to keep turning the pages. Highly highly recommend!!
