Do contemporary believers live the radically committed life Jesus calls his followers to live? In this revised and updated edition of his best–selling wake–up call, Chan challenges church members to take responsibility for their apathy, engage in honest self–examination, and totally surrender to God’s purpose.
Includes a new preface by Chan and a new chapter in which he shares about the last five years since Crazy Love’s first release.
God is love. Crazy, relentless, all–powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we’re missing it? It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe––the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E–minor –– loves us with a radical, unconditional, self–sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you’ve verbalised it yet or not… we all know somethings wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts –– it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.
Be warned, don’t read this book unless you want to be challenged. But if you’ve been a Christian for a while, perhaps for many years, and you are wondering if there could be more to it – a closer relationship with God, a more wholehearted devotion to him, then do pick up a copy! Francis Chan quickly pinpoints the tendency of Western Christians to be lukewarm, to ‘serve leftovers to a Holy God’. Reading those early chapters it is hard to be unmoved, not to be stung with his insightful comments which we recognise apply to our own lives. And yet as I read on, rather than feel condemned, I longed for my life to be different, as I was reminded of God’s amazing love for us. This book shows us that the answer to lukewarm Christianity isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts – it is falling in love with God, because as he reminds us, “when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.” This book doesn’t tell us how our life needs to change, but it does encourage us to examine our hearts and to take the challenges of God’s Word seriously. These include the calls to live simply, to be generous, to show compassion to those in need, to delight in serving others – instructions we are familiar with, perhaps so much so that we can take them lightly. But above all he encourages us to be those who are obsessed with God – characterized by committed, settled, passionate love for God, above and before every other thing and every other being. In my better moments that is what I long for and reading this book has encouraged me to pray that God will transform me so that He will become my greatest love and desire.
