The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the transforming event that turned a group of defeated, weak and scared disciples into a zealous missionary movement. At the centre of the church’s proclamation from the very beginning, Jesus’ resurrection shows that he is the Messiah, that he has been appointed the judge of the world, and that the new age has begun in him. It is the one thing on which Christianity either rises or falls.
But what really happened on Easter Sunday all those years ago? Why is it important and what does it tell us about Jesus and Christianity today? By systematically reviewing the evidence and by investigating counterclaims about the resurrection, students can reflect on their own belief and the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus for their lives.
Designed for students in years 10 and 11, this unit includes lesson PowerPoint presentations and optional extra resources, an assessment task and a class debate activity.
