Philo, a fisherman’s son lives in Phoenicia in the first century. Evil hangs over the family and it seems to come from his sister. Rumours reach Sidon of a prophet with amazing healing powers, but even the mention of his name has disastrous effect.
Philo runs away from home Wherever he goes he hears more news of this strange prophet. Who is he? What is he doing? What is the source of his power?
Recommended for ages 8-11.
A poignant story written by Patricia St John for young people from 9–14 years approximately. Reading it as an adult, I found it to be captivating and moving. Philo, a Syro–Phoenician boy and his family endure poverty, hardship, tragedy made worse by his sister’s sickness. In absolute desperation Philo leaves home to work for his Uncle in Galilee who is married to a Jewess. The story is interwoven with reports about a Prophet who is healing the sick and doing miracles. Philo is sceptical about him but eventually the evidence is overwhelming. Philo and his family’s lives are impacted by the Good News of Jesus as they learn about sin, forgiveness and healing. An uplifting story of lives transformed by faith in Jesus.
