For younger readers. An introduction to John Stott (1921–2011), figurehead of Anglican evangelicals in the 20th century. The story starts at the beginning, when he was banished from his Sunday school at All Souls, Langham Place, in London, for terrorizing the girls in his class with toy daggers.
An attractive biography introducing readers to ‘Uncle John’ personally, and to the life of the church in the UK and around the world.
John Stott worked with Billy Graham in establishing The Lausanne Movement. He wrote 50 books which have been read by millions. He became loved as a pastor, friend and leader in many countries, and was named in TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Includes maps, questions for reflection, and suggested activities.
This is a brief biography of John Stott, specifically aimed at younger readers. It takes us through Stott’s formative years, firstly growing up with family in London, then his student days and conversion during his time at Cambridge. We then read of his beginnings as a curate (assistant minister) at All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, ultimately becoming the Rector of the church at a reasonably young age. We then discover his growing influence amongst students in particular, but also throughout the world as a preacher and writer. The author gives a simple but detailed account of Stott’s life and ministry, which is accessible for younger readers. At the end of several chapters there are some brief fact-files with further information about some of the subjects covered. There are also some maps of some of the different locations mentioned within the book. This book will serve as a useful introduction to one of the finest preachers and Bible expositors of the twentieth century. As this book is directed at younger readers, it does not mention some controversial issues such as the 1966 debate with Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones or Stott’s views on eternal punishment. It does however, detail some of the key moments in his ministry, such as his acquisition and use of the Hookes retreat in South Wales, student missions with Billy Graham, and overseas trips. There are still much lessons to learn from his ministry today, and the full influence of his ministry still remains to be seen. This book could be a good for stimulating some discussion within Christian youth groups. Hopefully, this book will whet a few appetites to go on with further reading in later years.
