Anyone involved in Christian ministry knows how challenging it is to balance ministry and family responsibilities. Many demands pull leaders in different directions—making it easy to neglect one or the other, often without even realizing it. Writing from decades of counseling and personal ministry experience, Ajith Fernando points Christian leaders back to the most important aspect of their lives: their relationship with God. He then offers practical guidance for responding to real–life situations in the home, including disciplining children, dealing with disappointment, loving one’s spouse, and pursuing joy. This book presents Christian leaders with a healthy and God–centered understanding of family that leads to a flourishing home.
This book was my most anticipated Christian book of 2016…and it did not disappoint! Gleaning from his insights as a globally recognised Christian leader, Bible scholar and family man, Ajith Fernando explores various aspects of the Christian leader’s family life. Drawing from numerous Biblical passages and illustrating with personal stories, illustrations and anecdotes from a variety of settings, Fernando helpfully prescribes godly wisdom to allow a God–centred approach to family life. It humbled me and helped me and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Don’t let the title put you off! When we hear the word “leader”, we think that it must be exclusively for elders or ministers. Yes, this book has a focus that would be helpful for elders and ministers or anyone involved in ministry. However, if you are a parent or spouse, you are a Christian leader to someone. We all know that relationships bring the potential for stress, hurt, confusion and anxiety; particularly the relationships closest to us. How do we get a balance in life? To what do we commit our time? In what way does our sin express itself in our relationships? What does it look like to be a godly parent? I found myself asking these questions, and more, as Ajith tackles them with the heart of a counsellor and the insight of a professor.
