Renowned sex therapist and educator, Dr Patricia Weerakoon, explores the topics of sexual desire and arousal, falling in love, and dating—things like, ‘How far is too far?’ You’ll also cover topics like cybersex, pornography and homosexuality, and the effects these can have on our sex lives. The discussion is frank and, in parts, explicit. You may find it a little uncomfortable, but it’s stuff that will inform and challenge you. Ultimately, it calls you to consider who you are and what you stand for.
This Australian book is frank and direct, but also solid and biblical. It conveys a Christian view of sex, although it is clearly designed for those who are both Christians and those who are not. That may be ideal for your kids. Its directness may shock you, but it is what your children probably need.
Patricia writes with refreshing relevance and honesty, always in light of Biblical truth, and this is why I would recommend this without hesitating to teens. The first chapters lay out the biblical view of sex, but in a way that Christians and non–Christians can understand and be challenged by. Patricia is careful to address lots of different areas of sex – chapters include ‘Falling in love and dealing with lust’, ‘What is sex and what does God think of it?’, a Q&A chapter and an informed chapter on gender identity and sexuality. She includes plenty of up–to–date cultural references which keep her content fresh and relevant! If you’re looking for a book for teens that addresses the big, daunting area of sex, this is a great book to choose. It’s just over 200 pages, so perhaps better for teens who like reading rather than those who don’t – but chapters can be dipped into.
