This book is a must for all those starting out in pastoral ministry and essential for all those wishing to continue in it. By a combination of superb biblical exposition and sensitive application reflecting a wealth of personal ministerial experience, the author not only shows how to endure criticism but flourish through it. I really enjoyed and benefited from reading this. I could have done with it 40 years ago! A little gem of a book.
Melvin Tinker, Director of Theology, The Christ Church Newland Network, Hull
To be able to handle criticism well is a skill which all pastors need to learn. Any ministry, even the best, will take flak from time to time and it is easy to fall into crippling self-pity. When we are criticised what we need is a cool head, Biblical common sense and the comfort of Christ. This excellent book provides us with all three.
John Benton, Director for Pastoral Support, The Pastors’ Academy, London Seminary
Although this book is aimed at pastors or those considering the pastorate, it would be helpful for all christians to read this little but insightful book. The reality is we are all going to face criticism as believers and reading this title will also help in appreciating pastors and how to not approach your pastor when giving criticism. ‘Coping with Criticism’ walks through the bible, showing how to deal with criticism in a biblical manner. Looking at the sort of criticism that Jesus and the apostle Paul faced, then bringing what they faced into the equivalent of our culture and time. We have a brief reminder of the sovereignty of God and its relation to the dealing with criticism, followed by how Jesus and the apostle Paul handled criticism in different scenarios. The final chapter is pure application with lots of golden nuggets that are very helpful and insightful. It is easy to read and straight to the point. At times we see how Jesus and Paul were controversial in their approach to teaching and the broad way of handling different types of criticism. The book provides information, but it will take wisdom to know how and when to respond to criticism.
